Why September 1 is the Boston-area moving day
Roughly two-thirds to 70 percent of leases in the Boston area end on September 1, according to Wikipedia’s Moving Day (Boston) entry. In 2026 it fell on Tuesday, September 1, and in 2027 it falls on a Wednesday. The City of Boston reported issuing over 3,000 moving truck permits in August 2026, more than 2,500 of them for August 29 to September 1, and describes Boston as home to 36 colleges and universities and over 150,000 students. It added on-street parking restrictions in Allston, Fenway, Mission Hill and Roxbury for the move-in period.
Cambridge, where about two in three occupied homes are rented, and Brookline, with its older brick apartment buildings and walk-ups, are both part of that Greater Boston cycle. Locals often call the curbside pile of discarded furniture and mattresses that appears around the date Allston Christmas, after the Boston neighborhood where it is most visible.
When to plan a September 1 move-out clean
Interest in move-out cleaning follows the calendar. Google Trends data for the Boston metro, for the search “move out cleaning” as a five-year monthly average, shows searches for move-out cleaning rising from March, peaking in July and falling away by September. People who start comparing options in early summer have the most choice, so use this timeline as a working plan.
- June to July: fix the date and compare. Confirm your lease end date and any notice terms, then ask for quotes. Send your home size, neighborhood and move date.
- August: book the clean and the logistics. Confirm the cleaning date, book movers and, if you need street space for a truck, apply for the permit described below.
- The last week: plan the order of the day. Movers first, cleaner second, keys last. Decide who will be on site and when. Not sure what to put away? Read what house cleaners bring and how to prepare.
- Moving day: walk through and photograph. When the clean is done, walk each room and photograph it before you return the keys.
Tenants: fit the clean between movers and keys
A move-out clean works on an empty home, so it happens after the last box is out. If your lease ends on September 1 and your movers arrive that morning, leave a gap between the two. A clean squeezed into the final hour leaves no time for a walk-through.
Squares & Corners cleans empty homes as a one-time visit. A move-out clean covers kitchen cabinets and drawers, counters and sinks, bathrooms, closets, baseboards, window sills and floors, with the inside of the oven and fridge available as add-ons. See our move out cleaning service for the full list, or go straight to move-out cleaning in Cambridge or move-out cleaning in Brookline. Mention stairs, parking and building access in your quote request so the visit can be planned around them.
